Many of us carry "big dead rabbits" for a variety of different reasons. As a 17 year-old high school student, Suzanne underwent a routine abortion and soon encounters her new companion. She takes us on a journey beginning with the pain and innocence of youth, to meeting the love of her life; onto the emotional roller coaster of infertility and eventually on an exciting adoption adventure. Along her journey Suzanne discovers she is accompanied by yet another, unexpected companion. With unparalleled honesty, she speaks of the 20 years that followed her choice as she fought to come to terms with what she had done. Discover how she finally found healing and forgiveness for what she knew was unspeakable, and what she had believed was an unforgivable act. In a series of charming conversations she gives life and meaning to big, dead rabbit of guilt that she carried with her for all those years. “Why do you only talk to me when we’re here?” the rabbit asked. He was sitting in one of the two paths worn by a tractor tire and I was standing on the other. “I could ask you the same thing.” I said smiling down but I could see he was serious. “I don’t know really,” I thought for a minute. “I don’t even know your name.” “You never gave me a name.” He stared at me. “You really don’t know who I am, do you?” This is not just a story for Christians, or even just post-abortive women; it is a story of healing, hope and redemption for anyone who has been unable to put down any burden of guilt, and who may well see themselves mirrored in the author’s struggle to find her own self-worth. Her pregnancy was unspeakable. Her abortion was unspeakable. Her pain was unspeakable. This is her story of the journey which gave her the courage to be outspoken.

In this powerful memoir, Ditommaso recounts her life, from her abortion as a teenager to her college years, to falling in love, and marrying, to her struggle with infertility to adopting a child. through it all, she speaks of carrying a huge, floppy rabbit everywhere she goes. The rabbit is a metaphor for her grief and guilt about her abortion. The reason she chose a rabbit is that the father of her aborted baby made a comment on how she "killed a rabbit" referring to the old pregnancy tests which were done on rabbits (they used to inject a rabbit the woman's hormones and then kill it later to study it's ovaries, that was the only way to do a pregnancy test 50 years ago (although the book takes place more recently than that.) The comment stuck with Ditommaso for her whole life. She never truly gets rid of the rabbit, but her relationship to the rabbit changes and she no longer has to carry it. The metaphor works really well, I thought, for the heaviness she carried around from her abortion until she felt forgiven by God.

This is a very overtly Christian book, and that made it hard to relate to at times, as I am not a Christian. At times I found the symbolism of the lion to be overblown, even sappy, as well as hard to accept, and had a hard time understanding just how his presence was able to relieve her of her burden. but I think that is probably because my belief system is different. I would have given this book 4 stars ,based on my personal enjoyment and reaction to the story, but I decided to go with 5 because I think the only reservations I have about it are connected with my own baggage (perhaps, in a way, my own "dead rabbit") created by the bad experiences I had with Christianity and the negative impact it has had on my life. I am not a neutral reader. I feel that this book would definitely be a 5 star one to a Christian who believes in Jesus.. It is very well-written and powerful. Though I could not relate to all of it, it was a beautifully expressed and was a powerful book. I am very glad that the author found peace.

My Big Dead Rabbit Suzanne M DiTommaso 9780615621968 Books Reviews

I so enjoyed reading about her journey and how her love and spirit was evident throughout. A wonderful uplifting story everyone should experience...
This is a wonderful story and I couldn't put it down. I had to read on! She has had several bad experiences that other women need to read about in her book. An easy read and a very heartwarming story. Thank you, Suzanne for sharing your life!!
I started and ended this book on the same day. I just couldn't put it down. The writing was raw and I identified with the writer on many things as she was a teenager and even growing up and becoming an adult. I highly reccomend it to anyone religious or not.
Held my attention thoroughly and was easy to read. Just wanted to see what happened next. Deals with abortion and its after effects.
Read with tissues, have a glass of water close by, and expect that you won't be able to put the book down. Written simply and beautifully, this story reached me in a way I didn't predict it would. Surmising what the Big Dead Rabbit symbolized and not having direct experience with that, I expected to read a story about someone else. What I found is that this is a story about all of us who let our past hold us back in any way.
I couldn't put it down! This is a story of an amazing woman and her journey from a life altering decision and the struggles that come along with it. This author does such a great job writing that you really do get to meet the people in her life and go to the places she describes. You will celebrate as she finds love, healing, freedom, forgiveness and blessing. I highly recommend this uplifting book if you have been touched by abortion in any way.
This book is not unspeakable. In fact, the author has written it in such a beautiful way, I felt as though I was reading the type of fiction book I like to take on vacation; one that you can't put down because you have to know what happens next and how it all turns out. The author's raw courage to write such a book enticed me, but the way she exposed her deepest emotions, thoughts, and need for healing in a gtaphic yet gentle way kept me reading until the wee hours of the morning. The detail she uses in reference to song, fashion, world events, and her family, wrapped her journey of healing into a wonderfully easy book to read about what she felt was unspeakable. A beautifully written book about a beautiful woman.
