From the author of RATCATCHER, OMEGA DOG and SEVERANCE KILL comes a chilling Cold War spy thriller of betrayal, intrigue and catastrophe in a world that may well have come to pass...

"...[A] gripping, chilling read... a spectacularly horrible twist..." - Philip Challinor, reviewer

Cologne, 1974. East Germany's most celebrated opera diva, the Butterfly, is giving a rare performance in the West. The head of the British Secret Service intends to help her defect, and thereby pull off one of the biggest propaganda coups of the Cold War.

Except the Butterfly is a KGB agent, and her 'defection' is designed to infiltrate her into the highest levels of British Intelligence. The Service's deputy head knows this, and sends Michael Reece, a veteran agent, to stop her from coming across. But Reece finds himself up against a figure from his past who had a profound influence on the man he is today.

And not necessarily in a positive way...

REUNION is a 20,000-word novella about fear, betrayal and the moral murkiness of Cold War politics, and a psychological suspense story exploring the potentially far-reaching consequences of childhood enmity.

I was thrilled to get another Tim Stevens book, and then realized this is little more than a serial installment, or maybe a long magazine article. Although it certainly has all the trademark excellent writing of the author, the story left me confused and unsure of what really was the intent and purpose of writing it. It seemed to go nowhere and end before it finished. I really expected better of Mr. Stevens. Not his fault, I am sure, but beware that this is not as satisfying as his other work.

Reunion Cold War Spy Thrillers eBook Tim Stevens Reviews

I'm not sure how many spy stories have made explicit links between the nastiness of the English public school system (or, as Americans and other aliens would call it, the English private school system) and the nastiness of the espionage trade; but few can have done so as effectively as this novella. In 1974 a British intelligence operative is dispatched to Germany in an internecine spoiling operation, in which an old enemy from his schooldays is also involved. Transatlantic interference complicates matters further; and there is a pleasing not-only-contemporary resonance in the choice of 11 September for the main action. The story is very well constructed, in short episodes which move between the present, the recent past and the narrator's childhood; and it moves along with commendable clarity and perhaps just a little too much rapidity -- personally, I could have done with seeing the hints of psychological complexity in the school episodes elaborated a bit more. That quibble aside, Reunion is a gripping, chilling read and, as a spectacularly horrible twist reveals, something of an undercover agent in its own genre.
Not my cup of tea. I didn't care for style and tempo. That doesn't mean you won't like it. It was ok just........not my cup etc.
I enjoyed this story which kept me enthralled right to the end with a few unexpected twists and turns to the plot.
